Equivalents

Equivalents is a mixed-media installation that was installed at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, in January, 2016. The work was inspired by photographer Alfred Stieglitz’s series by the same name; a series of photographs of clouds that were widely considered to be the first abstract photographs ever made. In this installation, two videos of the moon rising through fast moving clouds flank a single video of the moon rising through smokestack emissions. The single video is projected onto a piece of circular glass in the centre of the space (the glass structure was produced by collaborator Simone Ferkul). The glass acts both as a projection screen and as a means of reflecting the projection onto the ceiling – an after image of sorts. A soundtrack, composed by Christian Chiera, highlights a mixture of natural and industrial sounds. One of the videos projects onto a window that faces the street, allowing residents of Toronto to see the moon rising in a location where the view is usually blocked by buildings.
