Slide Lectures features over 100 photographs of obsolete slide carousels from the collections at the Toronto Metropolitan University, York University, the University of Guelph, and Concordia University. Each carousel contains slide lectures that were once used to instruct art and design students. Hardly any of the carousels are full. The gaps are reminders that slides, unlike digital images, could be physically handled; they were swapped, borrowed for other lectures, and even lost. The photographs are titled after the lectures that the carousels contain. One particular title refers to Lyle Rexer’s book, The Antiquarian Avant-Garde, reminding us that the techniques and materials of the past, widely considered obsolete, still hold relevance for many contemporary artists working today.
