Views contrasts the viewpoints on domestic space by home owners and renters with the opinions of a home builder. The series is comprised of 25 colour photographs, each depicting a domestic interior. Each image is flanked on one side by a text panel with the homeowner’s written thoughts (in italic font) about his or her space, revealing an emotional or physical relationship to the home. While on the other side of the image is a text panel with the matter-of-fact and opinionated evaluation from a homebuilder (in normal font). The two texts describe the image between them with contrasting and sometimes paradoxical truths — from emotional, sentimental, and humorous to empirical, scientific, and profit-conscious. In one text, for instance, a home owner reminisces over a failed relationship, while the homebuilder’s text impersonally describes the space as “smooth sheetrock and dull latex paint.” In another image, a home owner poetically reveals a very personal relationship to her house and its contents. The home builder, on the other hand, callously refers to the house as a money pit. In other images, irony plays a larger role. One home owner wishes that her house had a fireplace. The home builder points out in his text that a protruding wall was likely built to cover up an old metal fireplace. Each work thus points to contradictory experiences of space, and the multitude of divergent viewpoints possible in the reading of any image.
